Vulcan Quarry Continues Forward Progress
Enhanced Layout Provides Community, Environmental Benefits
HONDO, TX (August 30, 2016) — Finalizing plans for its major investment in Medina County, Vulcan Materials Company (VMC) recently enhanced the design of its new state-of-the-art aggregates production facility, which will create good-paying jobs, generate tax revenue and serve as a catalyst for economic opportunity throughout the region.
Plans for the new Medina Quarry layout have been filed with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) and provide additional benefits to neighbors and the community while underscoring Vulcan’s commitment to operate the quarry in a safe and environmentally responsible manner.
Building off of the success of the development of the Southwest Gulf Railroad (SGRR) Medina Line, Vulcan recently acquired property adjacent to the Medina Quarry, away from significant floodplain areas. The property allows for the relocation of the quarry’s production, truck and rail loading and support facilities. The size and location of the quarry mining area remains the same.
“We had a unique opportunity to make a great plan even better and look forward to developing the Medina Quarry,” said Chris Havelka, the local Area Operations Manager for Vulcan. “The enhanced plan builds on our commitment to operating the Medina Quarry in a safe and environmentally responsible manner.”
The limestone quarry meets or exceeds regulations established by federal, state and local agencies and regulatory bodies.
The Medina Quarry will preserve 500 acres of buffer zone, natural landscape and wildlife habitat areas. It also maintains buffers to screen the facility and will recycle water used on site; utilize effective dust control measures; and transport product primarily by rail, significantly reducing 18-wheeler truck traffic.
The Medina Quarry is currently a fully-permitted and operational limestone quarry. Stone is now crushed for on-site use. For more information about the quarry, visit VulcanMedinaQuarry.com.
Last year, Vulcan unveiled plans to build a state-of-the-art facility at the quarry, which will serve as a catalyst for jobs, economic opportunity and revenue for Medina County and the region. The investment will create approximately 150 construction jobs over the two-year construction phase and will operate with approximately 50 full-time jobs. The quarry will generate millions of dollars in tax revenue for vital county government services, including road construction and maintenance, schools and public safety. It will also produce aggregate materials that lower construction and maintenance costs for local governments, schools, employers and residents.
